Þúsundir innlendra og erlendra ferðamanna fara um landið ár hvert á húsbílum og með fellihýsi. Árið 2015 ferðuðust 43.1% ferðalanga um landið með tjald, fellihýsi eða á húsbíl skv. upplýsingum Ferðamálastofu. Með slíkum ferðamáta eiga ferðalangar kost á að notast við ferðasalerni. Að því kemur að losa þarf úr ferðasalerninu og er aðstöður til þess að finna víða um landið. Aldrei skyldi losa úr ferðasalernum nema á tilgreindum stöðum til losunar. Í reglugerð um hollustuhætti segir að á tjald- og hjólhýsasvæðum eða í námunda við það skuli vera aðstaða til að tæma og hreinsa ferðasalerni. Rekstraraðili svæðisins skuli veita upplýsingar um og vísa á aðstöðuna, en einnig er hægt að leita upplýsinga um staðsetningu slíkrar aðstöðu annars staðar, t.d. hjá upplýsingamiðstöðvum og á bensínstöðvum.

Each year thousands of Icelandic and foreign travelers drive across the country in motorhomes or with campers attached to their cars. According to the Icelandic Tourist Board, 43.1% of travelers in Iceland in 2015 utilized tents, campers or motorhomes as their accommodation. Some of these have built-in toilets with associated tanks that need to be emptied regularly. Toilet holding tanks should always be emptied at locations with the appropriate facilities to do so or so-called dump stations. Regulations on hygiene require camp sites and motorhome parks to provide the appropriate facilities to empty and clean built-in toilets and tanks in motorhomes. Camp managers should provide information on the location of these dump station. Information on dump stations and their location is also provided elsewhere, such as at information centers and gas stations.
